Joseph O. Bennett Greaux "Miinwaasenieta"

Joseph O. Bennett Greaux “Miinwaasenieta”, 66, of Kimball Township, died Sunday, February 5, 2017 after a long battle with Agent Orange.

He was born October 23, 1950 in Port Huron.

Joe was a good man who wanted the best for his family and friends. He was a maintenance worker for the Port Huron Area School District until 1998. He served as a Lance Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam and was a member of the tunnel rats. Joe was very proud of his country and his Native American heritage. He taught the Ojibwa language, was a Medicine Man, and played the drums. He was a mentor to others who wanted to understand the Chippewa customs and beliefs and organized the Black River Pow Wow.

He is survived by his daughters, Shannon (Shane) Pettee of Port Huron and Melissa Greaux (Jesse Quintero III) of Lansing; four grandsons that he was especially proud of, Kyle and Evan Latham and Jesus IV and José “Joey” Quintero; a great grandson, Sebastian Latham; his parents, Roy and Lois Bennett of Kimball; two sisters, Evelyn Greaux and Pameal Phillips; aunt, Betty Conn; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Keith and Magdalena Caryl and Robert and Ethel Bennett; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at the Pow Wow Grounds at Wadhams and North River Roads in Clyde Township.

Memorials may be made to the Disabled Veterans of America.

Joe’s family would like to extend a thank you to all of the individuals who supported him at his Black River Pow Wow events and during his last days. He will be missed immensely and we feel blessed he was a part of our lives.
